Google CEO Sundar Pichai announces layoff of 12,000 employees worldwide, impacting roles across Alphabet, product areas, functions, levels, and regions. Employees will be given a severance package and support service

Google, one of the world's leading technology companies, has announced that it will be laying off 12,000 employees worldwide.

Sundar Pichai confirmed the decision, after months of rumours and speculation.

According to Pichai after reviewing across product areas and functions the layoff decision has been taken, aiming at aligning people and roles with the company's highest priorities.

The layoff will be implemented across all levels and regions, and will affect almost everybody's roles within product areas, functions, levels, and regions.

Pichai apologised for the decision and  for the impact it will have on the lives of concerned employees.

The affected employees will be given a severance package, which includes 4 months of salary, two weeks for every additional year at Google, and at least 4 months of GSU vesting.

Google will also compensate the action by paying 2022 bonuses and remaining vacation time. Other benefits include 6 months of healthcare, job placement services, and immigration support to the affected.

Pichai also acknowledged employees for their contributions and hard work, stating that their contributions have been invaluable and that the company is grateful for them.

He also promised that the company will support the employees in their next endeavour or opportunity.

The CEO also guaranteed that Google's products will be better than ever and that the company is ready to provide new experiences for   its users, developers, and businesses.

He mentioned that Google has considerable opportunities in front of it with AI across its products and that the company is prepared to approach it boldly and responsibly.

he concluded that this job cut decision is an unfortunate but necessary step for the company to align its resources with its highest priorities and to continue to deliver best on its mission. A town hall meeting will be held by the company on Monday to answer any questions and concerns the employees might have.
